History in the making.

Five. That's the number of American girls who are into the third round of the US Open. Lead by 28th seed and title favourite Serena Williams, a wave of young American tennis players are all buying to leave their mark on the US Open.

Irina Falconi, Christina McHale, Sloane Stepehens and Vania King all dispatched of their seeded second round opponents to advance to the third round, all of them making it their best slam result to date. 16-year-old Madison Keys was unfortunate not to join then, narrowly going down in a tough three setter.

Serena Williams may have been ruthless in her second round encounter with Michaella Krajicek, but her years on the tour are numbed as she approaches 30 this September. The refreshing, new found success of the young stars is a pleasant surprise to see after years of searching for "The Next Williams Sister" and well, they may not have found her yet, and we shouldn't get carried away but its pretty hard not to love this.

McHale and Falconi won their respective matches yesterday while today Stephens played her match on grandstand. The big serving American broke her 23rd seeded opponent three times in the opening set where she demolished Sharhar Peer 6-1. The Israeli then bounced back to get an advantage in the second set and served for it at 5-3, Stephens showed great resistance and persistence to force a second set tie breaker where she found the edge winning it 7-4. Stephens will play 16th seed Ana Ivanovic on Saturday for a spot in the 4th round.

Fellow American Vania King played against 29th seeded Australian Jarmila Gajdasova. Jarmila has been struggling for form since her loss to Caroline Wozniacki at Wimbledon and was not able to turn things around in New York. Edged on by her home crowed on court 17, doubles specialist Vania King was far too good for Gajdasova posting an impressive 6-2 6-0 victory. King had been to the third round at the US Open once before, in 2009 where she also defeated an Australian in the second round. Thing only get tougher for King now as she faces world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the third round.

Belarusian fourth seed Victoria Azarenka won her 2nd round match against Gisela Dulko to set up the most highly anticipated 3rd round match I can ever remember, as she now gets ready to take on Serena Williams.

Tomorrow night, Christina McHale takes on 25th seed Maria Kirilenko in the first night match on Ashe. Hope she doesn't get stage fright.

Carlos, thanks for letting me know about the overrated Peer getting paddled. I did watch the highlights on usopen.org a minute ago and it brought on horrendous laughter!

7pm Eastern
Christina McHale vs. Maria Kirilenko

Not Before:12:30 PM Eastern
Shuai Peng vs. Julia Goerges

Looks like Jarmila Gajdosova has quit Twitter for now due to foul comments coming her way. Now, I have no way of knowing everything that was said but these women need thicker skin because there will always be people out there trying to get a rise out of you.

Vera match is in progress I have her going down in this round.

I have Peng over Julia G. sorry Caps.

McHale over The Princess all because of patriotism.

Carlos -- Isn't Peng the one that hits the ball flat and low? Hopefully Julia will win but there is no telling with her. She's sorta like Kimmie without a ton of titles to her game.. Ya never know whether its going to be her or the evil twin showing up to play!

This Uverse multi court action is a joke. I just watched the end of this men's match because Julia is coming up next. Well, even though the coverage is suppose to be until 7pm which is the night session.. They always seem to dump the court coverage after the first match. Guess its time to fire up the laptop for viewing. I'm going to be building a new computer within the next few months or so, this one doesn't play high quality streaming from espn3/usopen.org very well.

Julia lost the first set with a few crap shots. Anyway, now she's sprawled on the ground getting a rubbing! I guess her back is hurting or something.

Julia loses and had a gimpy back. But, I'm not sure she would've won with a good one!

Diva loses as well.

Caps I missed the matches however I'm not surprised, let me begin with the Diva, she was up and down the entire summer one good tournament and one bad. It was time for her to have a bad tournament, she started the first round on wrong foot and here we are.

Julia: it was successful tournament for her. She matched her best at the USO in reaching the third round, she double her wins from the summer tourneys she had only one but won two in this slam.

Peng is pretty good in the hard courts as I said previously and she once again quietly made a deep run. You are right about Peng's game but there are some players who have trouble with balls that are hit flat and low.

Pennetta: finally woke up from the dead, some had her going down in the first round and now she upsets Divapova, sweeeeeeeeeet. How many people saw that coming? BTW I thought this match was going to be in prime time for some reason.

Clefairy check you DM Tweets.

Vera Z. won so she prove me wrong. :P

The anticipation is getting thick for this McHale/Kirilenko match! That said, Princess should win due to being the veteran but McHale has a lot of shots in her bag.. And Princess is notorious for choking.

Ha, just saw the pre match interview and McHale sure does say 'yeah' a lot.

Wow, what a letdown.. McHale loses in two sets. It was difficult to root against Princess but that's the way it goes!

Around 3-3 in the second set Princess came up gimpy from a leg cramp and wasn't moving hardly at all. However, McHale still failed to capitalize.

That said, McHale was nervous and just got overwhelmed. I expected at least 3 sets even if she lost at the end.

I am looking forward to Stephens vs Ana. Ana has her old BF back so Sloane could have a chance :-P
