Brisbane is where it is at.

Just 82 days to go! No, not until Christmas, until the 2012 Brisbane International.

In the later stages of this year it was announced that Brisbane will be upgraded from an International event to a Premier tournament. And wow, what an upgrade it was. Only five players have confirmed their participation, but you could not be happier with the line up. Lead by 13 time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Sam Stosur, Ana Ivanovic and Kim Clijsters all lining up for Brisbane next year.

The tournament held in Brisbane in the first week of the year is expected to become the premier lead up event for the leading ladies of the tour, negatively effecting the line up for Sydney, held the week before the Australian Open.

Clijsters is excited about the challenging and star studded field.

"With Maria (Sharapova), Sam (Stosur) and Serena confirmed for the Brisbane International it is going to be a tough contest but also be a great chance to test your form leading into the first grand slam," said the Belgian.

Thirteen-time major champion Williams has never played in Brisbane and said she was looking forward to it.

"Well, I never played in Brisbane and I have never been to Brisbane but I have heard great things about it," she said.

Queensland Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the 2012 Brisbane International will showcase the brightest stars on the tennis circuit.

“Serena Williams is an absolute powerhouse and her recent form at the US Open is set to excite fans, which will hopefully translate to a full house at the Queensland Tennis Centre,” Mr Reeves said.

“Having stars like Serena at the Brisbane International just a year after the floods demonstrates that Brisbane, and Queensland, is open for business.

Julia just lost to #104 Rodina 6-3, 6-4.

Pathetic!

From what I saw it looks like she beat herself. IMO, she doesn't have much of a game besides the serve and ball bashing. Sorta reminds me of a poor mans Lindsey Davenport. But, at least Davenport was consistent.

Talk about pathetic, how about Licki Bean going out in the first round to Brianti, and Nasti Pav losing to Sorana.

Pennetta withdrew due to left thigh injury.

Interesting that Pennetta pulled out of singles but she continues to play doubles. :/

Ostrich won her match today and I saw this on tennis.com:

PRAGUE (AP)—Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will lead the Czech Republic in the Fed Cup final against Russia.

Fourth-ranked Kvitova has struggled since winning Wimbledon but recently reached the semifinals of the Pan Pacific Open.

Czech captain Petr Pala added Lucie Safarova as the likely No. 2 singles player while Lucie Hradecka should team up with veteran doubles specialist Kveta Peschke.

The final will be played from Nov. 5-6 final at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium.

The Czechs are playing in their first final, although Czechoslovakia won the title five times between 1975 and 1988. The Russians have won the Fed Cup four times since 2004.

Ostrich wins easily over Dani - 6-2, 6-2. Looks like she'll be adding another trophy to her stash!

And in the Osaka final, Sponge Bart just won the first set against Yosemite Sam 6-3.

Carlos said...

Square Pants blitzes Yosemite Sam in the second set 6-1 to take the title.

I wonder which cartoon character....I mean player the Captain was rooting for?

Wow, sounds like Samuel got blew off the court!

Kvitova/Cibulkova should be on around 8am Eastern.

Carlos said...

Former members of Team Twins.

I'm taking the diminutive one. No reason, just want to root for someone shorter than me.

Ostrich's boyfriend looks even younger today!

Also Cibulkova needs to find a new tailor.

LINZ, Austria (AP)—Top-seeded Petra Kvitova beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-1 on Sunday to win the Generali Ladies for her first title since Wimbledon in June.

The fourth-ranked Kvitova had struggled since winning her first major at the All England Club, but she found her form while denying the seventh-seeded Slovak her first WTA Tour title.

Kvitova broke Cibulkova’s serve six times to win her fifth title of the season—and sixth overall—in just under 90 minutes.

“This was a great preparation for (the WTA Championships in) Istanbul,” said Kvitova, who was a late entry into the Linz tournament.

Only top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki’s six wins this season tops Kvitova, who improved to 4-0 against Cibulkova.

“I am just working on my tennis to get better and better,” Kvitova said.

Kvitova broke Cibulkova in the opening game and again with the first set tied at four games apiece. She eased through the second set to become the first Czech winner since Jana Novotna in 1998, who also won Wimbledon that same year.

Cibulkova was appearing in her first final since Montreal in 2008 and dropped to 0-3 in WTA finals.

“It was a great week for me,” she said. “It feels good that I finally got into a final again.”

No. 23 Cibulkova and 16th-ranked Peng Shuai are the only players in the top 30 without a WTA title.
