Take that, Sjogren's

Venus Williams had not played a competitive for seven months before stepping onto court in Miami and suffers from the autoimmune illness, Sjogren's Syndrome. All this however was not going stop her from upsetting Wimbledon Champ and world number three, Petra Kvitova.

Many people, including myself, we're pessimistic about Venus' return and to some extent doubted that it could happen. Not only did she prove me wrong on that one she also stunned me by taking down Kvitova, especially with the ease of the third set.

One break separated the pair in the opening set as Venus Broke Kvitova in the 10th game of the set to take the first set 6-4. The second set featured three breaks, two to Petra and one to Venus, as the Wimbledon champion pushed the match into a decider taking the second 6-4. The final set was all one way traffic and Venus Williams who "didn't really realize the third set was 6-0" stormed through the final set in just over half and hour.

Fellow comebacker, Alisa Kelybanova, was less fortunate as Maria Kirilenko got the better of her in just under 2 and a half hours in just her first match back after winning the biggest battle of her life, against Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Vera Zvonareva was the other top 10 seed to fall in the second round has she was defeated in straight sets by rising Spanish star Garbine Muguruza Blanco. Zvonareva stormed to a 4-0 lead in the first set before her young opponent battle backed to win 6-4 6-3.

Mona loses to Makarova.. No real shame there in my book.

What IS a shame though -- no WTA coverage so far on streaming.

Kimmie LOSES to Wicki?!?!

She can't be giving 100% out there. Perhaps she's saving her best tennis for the Olympics. Here is an idea, how about staying home until then?

I had a little feeling that Kim would loose, Yanina is a solid opponent and Kim hasn't played since Australia. I wonder if she will even bother on clay.

Is Kim gimpy again?

Clijsters saved three match points but appeared to suffer a recurrence of her ankle injury.

Almost forgot, Heather Watson took out stable wannabe Lovely Lucie. Wonder if she'll dispose of Bird next?

Kim Clijsters told TENNIS.com today that she is not contemplating retiring earlier than planned.

The Belgian Journalist and former touring pro Filip Dewulf reported that she was considering so, and Tennis Channel mentioned DeWulf’s tweet in a Monday morning broadcast. The frequently injured Clijsters says that while she is considering changing her practice regimen and possibly her overall schedule, she is still planning on trying to win the two Grand Slam crowns that elude her—Roland Garros and Wimbledon—and playing the London Olympics.

After falling to fellow Belgian Yanina Wickmayer at Miami, Clijsters, who has been dealing with ankle issues for the past year and has only played two events in 2012, said that she was playing at less than 50 percent.

Clijsters later tweeted: "I am not quitting!! Not yet! I have some great tennis left in me! Just making that very clear!"—Matt Cronin

In other news, Serena hits 20 aces against Stosur! Not sure of the record or what Serena usually averages but this seems like an awful lot to me.

If Bunny gets past Wicki, Serena is going to dismantle her and I yell YEEEEEEE HAAAAAWWWWW!

Lucinda Perry said...

20 is huge in a two set match! I think she hit 20 against Lena D in the '09 Wimby SF. The record is 24, hit by Kaia Kanepi, although that was a three set match!

Cibulkova has prepared for this match and is exposing Bird's weakness.. Which is her backhand in the corner and especially on low hit balls.

Bird is down 0-5 in the first set!

Cib choked up something like a 4-2 and 5-2 lead in the second set...

And she LOSES the tie breaker 9-7.

Guess I'll check the score later because this one isn't looking good for an upset anymore.

I can't believe Bunny just beat Serena 6-4, 6-4.

But, then again, Serena was playing like total crap.

Aggie works over Venus! Sure, Venus wasn't 100% but this illness isn't going away, she already has tens of millions in the bank and is rather old to be a tennis player. Its time for her to let go and stop trying to massage her ego on the WTA tour.

BRUSSELS (AP)—Kim Clijsters has a torn hip muscle and will need four weeks off the tour.

A statement from her management company on Wednesday said she’d been troubled with hip pains during the Sony Ericsson Open over the weekend in Key Biscayne, Fla. She lost to Belgian compatriot Yanina Wickmayer in straight sets.

Tests show “a small torn muscle” in her right hip, the statement said. She hopes to be back for the Madrid Open, which starts May 5.

Clijsters has said she plans to retire after the summer, highlighting her year with an appearance at the London Olympics.

Square pants has broken the streak and beat Bird 6-3, 6-3!

First Emily goes missing now Carlos!

Diva beats Bunny, Aggie beats Bartoli who came up limp but was still getting her butt kicked.

Final tomorrow around noon or 12:30pm (have seen conflicting reports) Eastern Diva vs. Aggie.
