Justine Henin admits she cheated Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters.

Eight years later and Serena Williams and Justine Henin are still looking for closure.

"Question,'' Williams wrote on her Twitter account. "I keep hearing about admittance to someone cheating me & lying about it after at the French open? Did she confess finally?''

Well that "someone'' Williams could not bring herself to say was Henin. And if Williams were truly interested in finding out if Henin had fessed up to what happened at the 2003 French Open, the infamous Hand Incident, then Williams could have just Googled it. Instead, she wrote it in a question with very pointed words to her two million Twitter followers, including media members who would make those words even more public.

So this was about sending a message. For some reason, Henin did talk about it, and other controversial moments in her career, in a TV interview in Belgium. She is acknowledging wrongdoing in several things, possibly for closure, while taking a slow exit from the stage since retiring last month.
"It's true,'' Henin said about the Hand Incident Wednesday, "that is not my best memory.''

I'll get into the specifics in a minute. But this is an amazing example of how a small, somewhat insignificant moment can escalate over the years, blow up into hard feelings and rivalry and probably even hatred. It all shows in the fact that both of them still feel the need to talk about it now.

In Henin's case, I assume it has been eating at her. I wouldn't say she cheated exactly, to use Williams' word, but what she did was provide a shocking example of terrible sportsmanship. It would define her in several ways for the rest of her career.

In Williams' case, I think she has let the discussion build up and re-shape the facts in her head. Henin was the one in the wrong that day, but somehow, that moment has grown over the year's into something that cost Williams a major championship.

Where she really was robbed was the 2004 U.S. Open quarterfinals against Jennifer Capriati. That match was one terrible call after another at crucial moments. Maybe she has some peace over that one because U.S. Open officials apologized publicly to her. And that match is seen as leading to the use of electronic line calling.

Henin had never acknowledged doing anything wrong to Williams, and sometimes you just want to hear someone admit it.

Those two moments surely added to her distrust regarding the 2009 U.S. Open, when she "foot-faulted" and then went into an f-bomb laced, threatening tirade against the line judge who called it. The buzz and talk about that has swirled in Williams' head, too, changing truth. I believe she did not foot fault that day, but I wasn't there to judge.

You can see the hand incident at about 3:50, Justine was very much at fault.

"Perhaps I should have said that I raised my hand,'' Henin said this week, "even though, in honesty, I still think that it didn't change the course of the match.''

Henin seemed to say that the Williams sisters played games of intimidation, and that she was using the incident at the time to stand tall against Serena and show that she couldn't be pushed around.

Last year, Serena played Jelena Jankovic, and was so concerned that Jankovic might think she was doing something unsportsmanlike – she was not -- that when they shook hands at the net afterward, she said, "Don't think I would do that. I'm not Justine.''

Oh, and if coming clean on the hand incident wasn’t enough, Henin admits now that she cheated on a 2004 call in the Australian Open finals against Kim Clijsters. She’s not exactly the most sportsmanlike person around, and she drops in my book for that reason.

No one can make you a cheater unless you are one. Good for you Serena

It is interesting that this article takes on the tone that Serena is somehow problematic. The fact that she chose to ask a question on twitter where she is regularly makes her motives suspect. Wow, i am stunned that this writer is not working for a major publication. If you didn't catch it, that was sarcasm.

Seems to me like you are very biased and pro on henin. I would not consider it a small incident. Justine cheats and causes serena a grand slam. Considering she did not win another french ever since then it is a big deal to me.

Serena cheats lol

Anonymous said...

I think there's little question that it was a foot fault.

Anonymous said...

It was definitely not a foot fault.

Both exhibited unsportsmanlike behavior at times. Grunting louder and louder as the rally goes on in an effort to intimidate her opponents is just as bad in my books. Ghetto-ball has no place on the professional level.

"ghetto-ball"? Seriously? Does Maria Sharapova and Victoria, with their loud grunting, play "gutter-ball"also?

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this,
like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you
can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit,
but other than that, this is great blog. An excellent read.
I will definitely be back.

You non-French speakers need to stop relying on shoddy translations and also Henin did not admit she cheated nor did she ever "deny" allegations...she simply did nothing during the match.

Serena's dubious gestures on balls that were supposed to be out, grunting, and other things were booed by the crowd as it deserved.

Serena threatening people with physical harm is cheating...like she did Sanchez and that lineswoman at the US Open.

I guess when your talent isn't as consistent and you feel intimidated, not that confident in your own abilities; it would cause someone such as Justine Henin to not speak up clearly when an opportunity to display sportsmanship presents itself. she is no champion which calls in to question her late age heroics in winning titles were they aided by illegal substances which would account for her seemingly unexpected exit. Her admittance to cheating on more than one occasion makes one wonder.

Anonymous said...

She did dope. Never was that talented for whatever reason. which is why she won't be remembered.

Lol, Serena is the one who ran into a panic room when the steroid inspector came. There's a reason her name is trash within the general community. Only racist fans love Serena and will forgive everything because she's black.

Serena nunca admtirá que se dopa

A racists? Really, that person came to Serena's house which is in a gated community and knocked on her damn door. Was she supposed to let some stranger into her home to "test her".....I'll wait. Asshole

I always knew my husband was up to something but I no proof of this. He receives strange calls, he protects his phone jealously and would never drop it for any reason. I went online in search of ways I can remotely monitor his conversations. I tried a number of phone monitoring apps but each one of them failed to access his phone. Moreover, I could not physically access his phone which made matters worse. I had already given up and resigned to my fate when I stumbled upon this team of (hacksecrete@gmail . c o m). Call or text him on +1(617) 402-2260 They provided me with a solution that helped me monitor his chats, calls, text messages and a host of other features. This incident is an interesting one. Serena had already started her service motion when Justine raised her hand...she was actually in the process of tossing the ball. Serena didn't stop, she just kept on serving. Suppose her serve had been an ace. Do you think Serena would have said, "Oh chairperson, don't count that ace, she had her hand up"? Maybe she would have, but I doubt it. I wouldn't. I'd say, "She put her hand up halfway through my service toss, which is not fair. I deserve that ace." If I was the chair, I'd rule in Serena's favor. But if you do that, how can you say that Serena deserves a first serve? There are no free swings. If the ace would have counted, then then the fault should count. Either way, it was really the crowd that caused this incident. They were rooting for the fellow French-speaker, Justine, and after the two overrules, they were amped up were concerned that their player was not getting fair treatment. Either way, it was really a minor incident. Serena got the second serve in, they had a rally, and Justine won the point. She eventually broke Serena and came from behind to win the match. Serena would do well to let it go.

As far as the foot-fault incident goes, an inside sources (fellow linesman) told me that the Chinese officials were much stricter about foot faults than American officials. If there was the slightest touch of the line during any serve, Chinese officials were right on top of it, making the call, while American officials tended to give you the benefit of the doubt, and only called the fault if it was egregious or repetitive. The story behind the Capriati match was that several of the top chair umpires had been suspended for selling their comp tickets for big money at the Olympics. The woman who was chosen to chair the match had never been asked to do such a big stakes match before, and was not ready for it....obviously. When she over-ruled Serena's down the line winner FROM OTHER SIDE OF THE COURT, this was just a brain-freeze. No chair in her right mind would make such a call. The ball was clearly INSIDE The line. It fluked away at a sharp angle from Serena's massive side-spin, but it was GOOD. The other calls were close...a couple on serve....but these were the kinds of calls tht got blown regularly back then. The big over-rule really cost Serena. It would have put her up a break in the deciding set. Funny, but Henin suffered a similar over-rule, when playing Capriati at the Open. Henin hit a high topspin looper that caught the back of the baseline. The line judge called it good, but Capriati howled, and the chair over-ruled. This allowed Jennifer to come form behind and steal the first set. The match eventually lasted 3 1/2 hours....the longest women's Grand slam match in history, I think. Justine pulled it out in three. In an Australian Open final a few years before, Justine beat Kim Clijsters, but there were four very close calls that went Justine's way that the computer would have called in Kim's favor. But they were all very close, and difficult to judge with the naked eye. As for lying, remeber Serena saying, "I didn't say I'd kill her" after the famous foot-fault call? (She actually said, "I fell like killing you.") or saying that her coach never gave her signals from the stands when he got caught doing just that, and admitted it? In the heat of competition, these things happen. They are not a big deal....let them go....

I recently hired a team of hackers known as Grayhathacks to help me bust my cheating wife. They were able to clone her phone and with the help of sophisticated spyware, I was able to mirror her phone's activity and gain access to her emails, text messages, and other data. I was shocked and horrified to discover that not only was she cheating, but that she was actively planning to leave me and my 3 year old son. I couldn't believe the level of betrayal, as she ridiculed me with her friends while I was busy trying to make our marriage work.

The process only took close to an hour, and I'm still spying on her as I haven't yet gathered enough courage to confront her. Every day, it seems like I discover more and more about her infidelity, and I'm heartbroken but relieved to have enough motive to close this bad chapter of my life. I hate that I had to resort to spying on her, but she left me no choice.

I want to thank Grayhathacks for their professionalism, they are the real deal. I would not waste my time with any of these other hackers, and wish I had known about them sooner. The use of spywares, bugs, and malwares to hack into phones and other data is a highly technical and advanced process, and Grayhathacks were able to carry out the task with skill and expertise. I would highly recommend their services to anyone in a similar situation.

I wanted to end my life the day my son revealed to me that the man I was chatting with, and heeded his advice to invest in a Cryptocurrency investment platform which I foolishly did was a scammer. My jaw dropped, I could remember my sleepless nights crying because I thought I would be rich and at the same time find a soulmate. It took me a few days just to calculate how much I had sent him and also invested in the platform, it was a total of 351,000.00 Euro in Bitcoin. I honestly didn't see the red flags even when it was all on my face. Anytime I try to initiate a video call with him, he gets angry and promises never to talk to me anymore. I am a lonely 73-year-old who needs a friend. After that experience, my son took it upon himself to help trace the scam and recover my scammed Bitcoin. After a while, all my son asked me was to provide him with screenshots proof of the Bitcoin I had sent the scammer, and my son successfully got my stolen Bitcoin recovered with the help of:
Cybergenie(@)cyberservices. com
